Pilates or Barre- which is better for me?

BBA Admin • Mar 12, 2023

We often get asked; “What is better- Pilates or Barre?” and while we’re all hoping to receive a decisive, ‘one size fits all’ answer, there unfortunately isn’t one.

Instead, I’ll tell you that I cannot, for the life of me, pick one over the other, and for good reason too.

In staying true to one of our core studio values; one approach does not fit all.

Not only are we all unique as individuals, but mentally, physically, and spiritually we are constantly changing. What works for one person may not work for you, and what worked for you on Monday may not be right for the Friday version of yourself.

Rather, I’d suggest listening to your body, reflecting on your goals & what you’d like to achieve out of class.

Both Pilates and Barre are for all people, of all ages, and of all abilities.

While both styles of movement have their similarities, they also have their differences. Pilates and Barre both offer a lower impact, full body workout that is challenging mentally and physically. They use a wide variety of movement modalities and work toward developing body, mind, and spirit coordination, while also focusing on building muscular endurance (that satisfying burning sensation), coordination and flexibility. To be honest, we could go on and on and on about the benefits of both.

Pilates has a large focus on repetitive movements which help to develop strength- especially core strength, balance and flexibility. It’s physically challenging but allows a deep focus on mind and body connection. Reformer Pilates relies on resistance from the springs of the reformer machines, whereas mat Pilates focuses on body weight exercises with the use of props.

Barre is like Pilates, but, with an extra cherry on top. I’d describe it as Pilate’s, more fiery and more dynamic younger sister. Barre is a mixed bag of repetitive movements, pulsing and holding- most importantly, all synchronised to the beat of music. It’s higher intensity, more aerobic, challenges balance and strength but extremelyyyy fun. It incorporates the use of a ballet barre and ballet postures, but rest assured, ballet experience is definitely not required.

I strongly believe variety is the spice of life, so, in a final attempt to answer the question- why pick one when you can have both?
