Here’s some things you can leave in 2017

Lesli Lindgren • Jan 09, 2018

You’re probably over ‘new year’ posts, emails, blogs and conversations by now, but this is one that’s about the change we can make to last a lifetime, and we’re all a little excited to start the new year the right way! January is an exciting time for the studio. We welcome back our regulars after the holidays, and we say hello to many new faces - including those that might be a little nervous about trying something new… or perhaps a little self conscious… or maybe just excited to get a head start on those resolutions. Consider this post a ‘try before you buy’ insight into the studio, because we aren’t like the others.

I think New Year’s Resolutions are beautiful; letting go of what doesn’t serve you and setting the best of intentions for the year ahead…. But perhaps we focus a little too much on the latter? Here are a few of our favourite things to let go of, to create room for all that 2018 has to offer you.

Comparisons

Comparing yourself to others (and previous versions of yourself) is a losing game, and we would much rather see you run your own race.

You will never see us posting before and after pictures, or stock photos of models with gymnastic level flexibility. We’re not about that life. We don’t subscribe to the notion that you only exercise for physical benefits, we believe that the mental and emotional benefits are just as important (if not more!!). Don’t get me wrong, we have classes that tighten, tone, improve your cardiovascular endurance and get you right into the middle of the fat burning zone, but we aren’t going to dwell on it. Our classes are fun, fresh, challenging and you leave feeling refreshed, and part of a community that lifts each other up. Our members quite often find that they reach their goals, and mostly without even realising it.

Punishment

Another thing we let go of (well, we never actually had it to begin with) is punishment. For some reason having a negative relationship with food has become pretty normal in this day and age, and that is one thing you will never see us encouraging. We aren’t going to reprimand you for eating a doughnut, or not enough protein in one day. Personally, we believe that to eat, is to nourish and what works for one person might not work for another. Negative cycles of eating bad food, punishing yourself with more exercise, feeling crap, then rinse and repeat might work for some, but fosters habitual negative self talk and guilt. We would much rather empower you to love yourself, celebrate movement, and as a result eat foods that help you thrive.

Unrealistic expectations

I am all for setting big goals, but there is nothing wrong with taking your time. Perhaps this is why too often resolutions get forgotten about in February. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you want to declutter this year, don’t go tackling the 137 boxes in the attic space first. Heck, don’t even start with the ‘study’ room, aka, ‘junk room’. Start with the top drawer of your desk first. Or the top shelf of the pantry. Little by little, you’ll get the job done.

Some people really can lose 10 kilos in half a heartbeat, but from what we have seen, slow and steady really does win the race. Not what you want to hear in a society where everyone is used to getting everything immediately. It can be really hard to be patient and work towards a long term goal, I hear you, 6 weeks ago I had a baby and ever since I have been bombarded with ‘get your pre baby body back’ ads ( because, you know, I need to feel self conscious about my body right now. Thanks.)

When you come to our studio, you can be assured you are walking into a studio that has left behind body shaming (‘pre baby body’ is a dirty phrase in our books), left behind the guilt trip of cheat meals and we sure aren’t going to punish you for having a ‘bad day’ in class. We don’t believe in comparisons, but we do believe that your best is yet to come, and we would love to be part of the community that helps you get there.
